A Surprise Birthday Gift!!
W.A.L.T: Recount a moment in time.
About a year ago for my Birthday, I asked my mother if she could kindly purchase a dog for my present. A frown immediately appeared upon her face as those words met her ears.
If I could tell you one thing about my mum is that she absolutely hates animals, so if you could imagine she of course said. “NO! Why are you even asking me this?” She then carries on to give 100 reasons on why not to get a dog.
So my mum gave me no choice as I really wanted a dog. I went to my Nan and asked her to buy me a dog for my birthday. I had been bugging my Nan about wanting a dog for ages.
What really got her to get me a dog was I told her what my mum said, “I could get one, but... let's just keep this secret between us, shall we?”
So a few days after my birthday, my nan told us to meet up with her on the side of the road. Pouring down with rain, cold as ice on a winter's day, she couldn't have chosen a worse place to meet up. But it was all about to be worth it because on that day, I got a dog that I thought could only become real in a fantasy world.
As you could probably tell, mum was not happy with this.
“What's done is done.” I told her.
You could not believe what happened from then on. Every morning before school, instead of mum waking me up, she walked the dog and put it into my room. The dog would start barking on the top of her lungs to rise my from my deep sleep.
i'm surprised I got any sleep at all after that.
The continuous sound of barking forced me to wake up and have a shower, that was me for the past year, she could've just asked me, to do so but she was so stubborn about not having a dog. I guess it blinded her in some way… but now that I do think about it, if she asked me I would probably give a big speech about why I shouldn't have a shower .
After we got our tiny, furry, and definitely adorable canine friend, we needed to give it a name like any good person would. First we were all given a choice and we each chose a name, wrote it on a piece of paper and then put it in a hat. Because it was my dog I picked a name from the hat.
From the hat, Taonui was selected. We all thought it was a suitable name for the dog but the only thing was, we all kept forgetting her name... funny about that.
At some point, last year, my brother even started calling her Bob, then Cherry, and finally Dave. So the whanau got together and we decided to call her Charcoal. As it was her black fur. that pointed us to that decision.
For two years now, we've had Charcoal and if you're wondering, my mum is still very adamant that we should not have our dog. If you visit our house you can hear her hint loud and clear, she will say things like “Everyone come here... except the dog.”
Will she ever get used to that dog?… we will never know.
